県立広島大学宮島学センターは、世界文化遺産「厳島神社」を有する宮島の学術研究（宮島学）、学生教育、地域連携を一体のものとして事業を展開しています。

The materials held by the Center for Miyajima Studies are photographed using a high resolution digital camera and made available to the public on this digital archives site.

The materials gathered here are available for all to use for research, study and educational purposes related to the history and culture of Miyajima.

Secondary use of published images is strictly prohibited.

The Prefectural University of Hiroshima Center for Miyajima Studies is tasked with spreading knowledge and awareness of Itsukushima Shrine (Miyajima Shrine), a World Cultural Heritage Site, for future generations through advanced research on Miyajima. It provides a dedicated student education program, and works with the local communities to promote activities and events on Miyajima.

宮島学研究 Miyajima Studies Research

宮島の歴史や文化に関する学術研究を推進しています。センター専任教員と、日本史、日本文化史、日本文学、 英文学、中国文学等を専門とする人間文化学部国際文化学科の教員が協力して活動しています。研究成果は 公開講座・講演会、企画展示などを通して積極的に発信、地域のみなさまに還元しています。

We perform advanced research into the history and culture of Miyajima. The Center brings together experts from the Faculty of Human Culture and Science and the Department of Intercultural Studies who specialize in Japanese history, Japanese culture history, Japanese literature, English literature, and Chinese literature, etc. In turn, the Center arranges exhibitions, presentations and conferences to further inform the public about Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine.

宮島学教育 Miyajima Student Education

国際文化学科の専門科目「宮島学」では、教員の最新の研究成果を学びます。 学生たちは、本学が所蔵する古文書、錦絵、明治以降の写真等に触れることができます。また、宮島現地で の調査活動（フィールドワーク）も実施します。学修の成果は、宮島関係資料を展示する企画展示や、宮島を訪れた外国人観光客への英語によるボランティアガイドなどにも活かしています。

The purpose of the Department of Miyajima Studies is primarily to provide students of the Department of Intercultural Studies with the latest expert knowledge from ongoing research regarding the history and culture of Miyajima. Students are able to study, see, and touch historic documents, photographs, artworks and relics form Miyajima’s long past. Additionally, students perform a vast array of fieldwork and hands-on study on Miyajima. Among other activities, students also prepare and exhibit the results of their studies for public view and some students will also take the opportunity to learn how to guide on Miyajima in English through a special course, after which they will volunteer to guide foreign visitors at Miyajima around the main attractions.

(Miyajima Studies is a specialized study within the Department of Intercultural Studies, providing students with the latest results of faculty research. Students have the opportunity to work hands-on with ancient texts, colored drawings, and photographs from the Meiji period. In addition, students participate in on-location field work activities at Miyajima. The results of studies are used in exhibitions of Miyajima related materials. Students also learn how explain about Miyajima in English and participate in volunteer guide experiences for foreign visitors.)

地域連携 Regional Collaboration

廿日市市や一般社団法人宮島観光協会、そして地域の様々な団体と連携して事業をおこなっています。

In coordination with the city of Hatsukaichi and the Miyajima Tourist Association, together with the local communities and community groups, the university play an active role in preserving the history of Miyajima wile supporting and participating in numerous activities on Miyajima.

古文書 Ancient texts

宮島学センターが所蔵する中世・近世の古文書をご覧いただくことができます。

毛利元就、毛利輝元、吉川元春の厳島信仰の一端を知ることができます。

くずし字の解読には「翻刻」機能をご活用ください。

You can view the ancient texts and documents from the medieval period (late 12 th century to late 16 th century) and the early modern age (early 17 th century to mid 19 th century) collected by the Center of Miyajima Studies.

You can learn about some of the beliefs held by Mori Motonari (1497-1571), Mori Terumoto (1553-1625), and Kikkawa Motoharu (1530-1586), members of the Mori clan during the Sengoku (feudal wars) Period in relation to Itsukushima Shrine.

絵図 Drawings

宮島学センターが所蔵する近世・近代の絵図をご覧いただくことができます。

宮島を描いた絵図の多くは、厳島神社を中心として西端は大願寺や大元神社まで、東端は御笠濱や有浦までを描いています。

町の主要部は殆ど変化がありませんが、現在の地図や観光マップと細部を比較すると、違いを発見することができます。

You can view a large collection of beautifully illustrated drawings and illustrations from the early modern (early 17 th century to mid 19 th century) and the modern age of Japan (1868 – 1945) held by the Center of Miyajima Studies.

Many of the illustrated drawings of Miyajima, shown in brilliant color and intricate detail, are centered on Itsukushima Shrine with many including views of Daigan-ji Temple or Oomoto Shrine to the west and the area known as Mikasa-no-hama or Ari-no-ura, the modern day town area, to the east.

The main part of the town area is hardly changed at all. Compare the details of a current map or sightseeing map to the old images and can enjoy finding the differences.

絵はがき Picture postcards

宮島学センターが所蔵する近代・現代の絵はがきをご覧いただくことができます。

絵葉書の多くは発行年が記載されていませんが、まれに「 要塞 認可」と表記し、認可された年月日が記されているものがあります。

絵はがきは点数が多いため、キーワード検索をご活用ください。

The Center for Miyajima Studies also possesses a substantial collection of picture postcards from days past. The collection shows the people, places and structures of the island during the post-Edo, early modern Imperial era of Japan beginning from 1868 to pre-WWII in both black and white, and in color.

Enjoy the scenes from the past. See places and sites that no longer exist. From the “meishi tori” rice scoops of Senjokaku to the time before trains brought travelers to Miyajima-guchi, from views of seashores that have long since been reclaimed to buildings and monuments that have changed, been repaired or no longer exist. These postcards will certainly connect you to a different era and give you a new perspective of Miyajima.

While many of the postcards are without publication dates printed on them, some of the rarer cards show markings such as Defense Command Approval along with the date of approval. These indications of Defense Command include the Kure Defense Station from 1900 – 1903 and the Hiroshima Port Defense Command from 1903.

Of special note, some of the postcards with military approval contain the name of the command station, while others are do not. There was no standard format so the expression “Defense Command Permission” or “Defense Command Approval” were used with the same meaning.

江戸後期の画家岡 岷山 ( みんざん ) の「厳島図」や、歌川広重や月岡芳年など、有名絵師が手がけた宮島に関する浮世絵などをご覧いただくことができます。

Other historic visual treasures to enjoy for Miyajima’s past include: “Itsukushima-zu” by the late Edo Period painter, Oka Minzan, and famous Ukiyo-e wood block prints showing scenes of Miyajima by such famous masters as Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, and others.
